Entry #4 What is Geocaching?

Do you like to get outside and explore? How about searching for hidden treasure? If you have answered yes to either of these questions then Geocaching may be something you might be interested in dabbling in.

Geocaching is the world’s largest a real-life outdoor treasure hunt where you use GPS to track down the location of hidden treasures. Boxes containing various items are hidden by fellow Geocachers. The hidden treasures, also known as geocaches, are then tagged via GPS and then placed onto Geocaching.com. From there you can download the app to your GPS enabled smart phone and begin searching for Geocaches. You would not believe the number of Geocaches that are hidden around, chances are there are even a few in your own neighborhood.

You  are probably wondering what exactly is inside of these Geocaches and what do they usually look like. Well that varies drastically from cache to cache. One might look like a rock, a log, an electrical box, or even a bird. Geocaches are almost always disguised or hidden in some way. Not only for the reason of making it more challenging to find for Geocachers, but also to keep non-Geocachers from finding them. Furthermore, what’s inside of a cache is completely up to the cache creator as well. Some caches have a theme that they go by, while others just place a bunch of random odds and ends from around their house inside of their cache container. Most all caches will have a log where you write your Geocaching username and the date after you have found the cache

And I almost forgot to mention, one of the keys to Geocaching. If you take from the cache, you are supposed to also add something from your treasure chest. This way the cache stays stocked with treasures. Just remember, if the cache has a theme to try to put something that fits the theme of the cache.
